You always remember your first – Rykers tale chapter 2

‘My name’s Scott, your new boss. Any questions?’

My first day on the job in Aruba was hard. I’ve had plenty of hangovers and come downs, but that heat on the beach really knocked me for 6 and I was rough as hell on the 10th September 2016! But the club took a chance on me and I wasn’t going to let this opportunity slip away. I got to the clubs ground, Guillermo Trinidad which isn’t far from where I was staying at the time, around 20 minutes later than the rest of the squad.

With my ever so slightly pounding head and dry throat, I decided there on the spot, that I’d go in with the tough guy approach with my new team. ‘Right then, you lot don’t know me, and I sure as hell do not know any of you. What I do know is this…’ I waited a moment as the players stared with anticipation at my next words ‘According to the press, you lot are good for a play off place, and I will accept nothing less. My name’s Scott, your new boss. Any questions?’

Things got off to a good start. We had a decent session, there were a couple of decent looking payers, talent wise I mean, not good looking in an attractive sense. There wasn’t any real stand outs in the team but they all seemed to gel together well.

By the time 14th October came round it was time for our season opener. We’d played a few friendlies against local nobody’s and I actually saw some good performances in those kick abouts. You always remember your first of everything. Your first beer, your first time with drugs, your first hooker, your first trans girl, you get the idea. So I will always remember my first match as a football manager. As a side note, from that moment on I kept a log of everything I did as a manager. I kept notes from every game, every training session and every conversation I had with anyone above me. I’m sure you’ll agree as we get further into my story, that this came in handy in more ways than one.

The game was against SV Britannia in the Division di Honor of Aruba, basically the Aruban Premier League.

The first half wasn’t much to write about, so I won’t bother. But the second half was where our lads kicked into another gear. We hassled their defence and got a penalty early in the second. Annuar Kock, seriously that’s his name, converted from the spot and that set us on our way.

2 more late goals gave me and the boys a thumping 3-0 win in our first game together

More wins followed as we beat Dakota & La Fama to see us top of the league after playing 3 games. I was under no illusions that we’d stay there for long though.
