BACK TO THE JOURNEY, MAN – WHEN JOCK MET CLAUDIO

After an early morning chat with the squad after their end of season break, Jock and assistant manager Nicolas Burtovoy were having a heated discussion

‘Well you can’t, you just can’t’ Jock remarked

‘I can, and I am’

‘You can’t’

‘I can’

‘You can’t’

‘I can’

This went on for what seemed forever, before Nico stormed away saying ‘You’re really something else, do you know that’ to which Jock said smiling ‘Thanks, I am great if I do say so myself’. Nico shook his head and slammed the door on his way out.

The discussion came about as although Cancun as a club can’t go up a division for at least 2 more seasons (due to the Mexican FA banning all promotion and relegation for 3 seasons, something to do with keeping clubs in business), Cancun’s staff certainly can, as Jock has found out.

Despite Jock’s efforts to influence Nico’s decision, his mind was made up. He had been offered the same role but at Liga MX, the top division in Mexico, side FC Juarez, and had accepted

But despite feeling down at Nico’s jumping ship, all was not lost. The chairman told Jock not to worry, a replacement had already been found. When he asked how did the club move so quickly, the chairman confirmed that Nico had told the club a few weeks ago he was leaving at the end of the season regardless, so the club moved quickly to secure the services of a new assistant.

‘Jock, meet your new assistant, an old friend of mine, Claudio’

A man not as tall as Jock walked in, nodded and spoke perfect English ‘Good morning, you’re Jock, I’ve heard a lot of things about you’

‘Good things I suspect’ Jock replied with a grin on his face

Claudio’s face didn’t budge. ‘Let’s get to work shall we? I’ve got some ideas I want to run past you, speficially regarding the young man you have up front, Tommy’

After making their way to the training pitch, where the first team were warming up, Jock tutned to his new assistant and asked ‘I feel like I recognise you from somewhere, have you ever been in the Blue Star working mens club in Dundee?

Claudio rolled his eyes ‘No, certainly not. I don’t think I’ve ever been to Dundee’

‘You have, I know you have, your face is familiar to me’ he racked his brain for an instant ‘I’ve got it, you must’ve played against Dundee at some point, which was it you played for, the green and white shite or the blue nose dog nonces?’

‘I assure you I’ve not played for any team in Scotland, I have however played for…’

‘Europa League then! Dundee have played a few times in it, you’ve either played for Dynamo Moscow in 2012, AEK in 2010, Slask in 2011 or that Finnish team, 2009 I think’

Claudio was impressed with Jocks instant knowledge of Dundee Untied, but was slightly insulted he hadn’t clicked on who he was yet

‘No, let me enlighten you, you seem to know a lot about football. Do you know who Werder Bremen are?’

‘Sure do, Germany’s green and white wearing Celtic wannabe’s!’

‘Okay, and the Bundesliga, do you know who has won it the most?’

‘Bayern, obviously’

‘Yes, do you know who has scored over 200 goals for both Werder & Bayern?’

‘Easy mate, Claudio Piz….’ It dawned on Jock at that moment just who he was talking to ‘Oh my days, I’m so sorry. Let’s start over. I’m Jock, it’s an honor to meet you’
