As they stood on the side line of the pitch in the home dug out in the 72nd minute, watching as vice captain Armando Zamarano rifled in a shot at the near post to give Cancun a 4-1 lead, Jock and assistant manager could agree what most fans in that stadium had already concluded, and that was that Cancun FC were going to win the Champions Trophy game!
The game was as even as they come, but Cancun did what Atlante didn’t and that was taking their chances. On any other day Atlante could well have come away with the win, but that didn’t matter. Cancun FC, and Jock McGhee were Expansion League winners!
Another trophy was given to Jock and the players as the game finished
In the dressing room after they had all been given their medals and a photo with the trophy, Jock stood before them, soaked in champagne, and spoke
‘Boys, winning 1 trophy is a good effort, but to win 2 is absolutely fantastic! The buzz I’ve had off winning this trophy is better than any drug, and trust me I’ve tried them all!’
The clubs chairman had just coincidentally walked in at that moment
‘As a player, I never won much (The chairman looked disapprovingly at Jock, as on his application email Jock claimed to have won multiple trophies as a player) but trust me when I say, this is just the beginning for me & you! Tonight, we’ll celebrate in style!’
For the night after the game, the club chairman had managed to pull in a favour and rent out a hotel’s conference room for the players. Jock got there after everyone else, he was drinking at his flat before calling a taxi, and as he walked in the room turned and showered him with applause and popped open multiple bottles of champagne, showering most of the people there.
The general consensus was that Jock was mostly the man responsible for the title winning campaign and that it wasn’t just beginners luck. Top scorer Delgadillo declared it was Jocks words of wisdom in broken Spanish, his constant motivation on the side line and only losing his temper when he needed to, which was quite often that did the trick.
As the drinks continued to flow, Jock had a bright idea and that would be get his disco boots on have a dance. Now, Jock isn’t a small man, 6 foot 3 and 15 stone so when he decides to have a boogie, people need to get out of his way. Unfortunately, 6 foot 6 center half Luis Alonoso also had the itch to have a dance. When the 2 of them, drunk as can be, got going it could be best described as organised chaos on the dancefloor. After a short while, Luis hit Jock in the face with one of those dangly arms of his, and knocked him unconscious!
When he woke up in the hospital his head was ringing. He opened his eyes and as he did he was greeted with a pretty face smiling back at him.
Pretty face said to him ‘Don’t try and speak, your mouth is wired shut. Your jaw is fractured in 3 places’
‘Mmph..’ Jock whimpered solemnly. Oh no, not my jaw he thought, how am I going to chat shit now?!
Sensing his frustration, the girl said to him ‘Don’t worry, it’s not that bad, it should heal within a couple of weeks, it’s only a mild fracture’
There’s nothing mild about the pain though! he thought to himself. Sitting up he recognsied the girl who was sat with him, but in his still half asleep state he couldn’t put a name to the face. ‘Don’t worry Jock, everything will be fine, I’ll be right here with you’ she said before getting up and leaving the room.
I can’t remember her name, but she is really pretty he said to himself in his head. Deciding he’s got nothing else to do, he checked his phone and the clubs website, where the end of season stuff was posted yesterday
The club had done exceptionally well all things considered. A no named no experience manager overseeing things, a team made up of journeymen players with next to no honors to their name, the exception being keeper Campestrini who had won multiple titles in Mexico & his native Argentina, as well as multiple loan signings (Alonso’s load deal from Cruz Azul was extended another season) complementing the playing staff.
The noticeable thing from the honors list was top scorer Delgadillo, who’s 34 league goals were the catalyst for Cancuns success, as well as Paul Uscanga chipping in with a remarkable 27 assists.
The question now would be, can they do it again?
