BACK TO THE JOURNEY, MAN – IT IS NEVER WINTER IN THE LAND OF HOPE

It’s a warm, clear skied December afternoon in Cancun. Jock walks down to the home changing room, passing the empty canteen, referees room, away dressing room and physio’s office on either side of the corridor. When he reached the double white doors at the end with a plaque that reads in bold sky blue letters – Vestidor casero. Nunca echarse para atrás, he grabs the handle and pauses before turning it.

This could be considered the first proper test of Jocks young career as a manager, and as such, his next words might not be make or break, but they were certainly vital to the task at hand. After winning the first leg 1-0, and then securing the same score line in the second with a 91st minute winner to win the tie 2-0 on aggregate, Jocks team found themselves up against Correcaminos in the semi final, another 2 legged affair

The first leg ended 3-2, which doesn’t tell the whole story as Cancun, despite going 2-0 up within 11 minutes were second best all through the match. Campestrini in goal kept Cancun in the game constantly. A third goal shortly before half time seemed to wrap the tie up, but the plucky bastards wearing their blue tinted home strip wouldn’t stop.

Both teams could be forgiven for thinking it would end at least 3 all after the home side reduced the deficit to 3-2, but that Scottish fighting spirit transferred from the shouting idiot on the side line into his players.

The return leg at Cancun’s home ground was the polar opposite of the first in many ways. An even game all things considered and Delgadillo scoring his 17th of the season in a 1-0 win to secure passage to the opening stage final.

Once the upcoming 2 legged final is out of the way, we’ll be exactly half way through the season, and a potential trophy in his first 6 months in the job isn’t out of the question. Not wanting to jump too far ahead in his mind, Jock finally enters the room.

‘Lads, there’s a common misconception in football, and that is that the strongest team always wins. To that I say…(he waited a moment) Well if you’ve followed Dundee United as long as I have then you’ll know that saying is true, Dundee are shite man, it’s so heart breaking, everything’s there…’

‘Jock?’ Nicolas Burtovoy said, but Jocks rant kept going on

‘….They’ve got the bigger support in the city, better stadium, better kits, they’ve beat Rangers a few times an all…’

‘Jock!’

‘…Not to mention there’s no debt at the club, everything is there for the taking, and that incompetent….’

‘Jock!! AMIGO!’

‘Oh sorry Nico, you were saying?’

‘No, YOU were telling the players about today, Cancun, not Dundee!’

‘Oh right, yeah, I was. So anyway we’ve beat this lot already haven’t we, they were 13 wins from 13 until they came up against Jock McGhee! Lets get out there and give them another pasting shall we!’

A pasting is far from what the last game between Cancun and Atlante was. A well fought and well deserved 1-0 win for Jocks team, but they clung on for dear life for long periods of that game.

This is a 2 legged final, and as that old saying goes, anything can happen in football.
