BACK TO THE JOURNEY, MAN – YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST

You never forget your first anything. Your first kiss, your first proper girlfriend, your first beer (legally anyway), your first arrest and so on. Jock fondly remembers all of these things, his first legal beer and arrest came on the same day after all.

‘It’s so warm here, puts Dundee to shame’ Jock was saying though the speakers on his headset as he was talking to his best friend back in Scotland. It’s been a total of 4 weeks since he officially took over as Cancun FC manager, and with it pre season has also finished. A couple of easy victories against local nobodies and the reserves put Jocks mind in a good place heading into the season proper.

‘Not a lot pal, mostly just sipping mojita’s and banging senorita’s’ were Jocks next words to his friend nearly five thousand miles away, followed by ‘Aye I know pal, but they’ve already got a guy in here, he’s not bad, speaks the lingo and English canny well like’. His friend was asking about the possibility of joining Jock in Mexico as his assistant. ‘Give it time’ Jock reminded him.

In preparation for his first ever match as a manager, Jock decided getting the players to watch Braveheart would be a great idea. After it finished, Jock said ‘Hey Zammy, you liked it yeah?’ towards club vice captain Armando Zamaorano, who Jock thought privately would be a key player that season, who in turn, whilst looking utterly perplexed replied ‘No realmente, ¿qué demonios acabo de hacer qué amigo?’

‘I could tell ya’ liked it bonny lad. I’m a bit like Braveheart, myself, ain’t that right Dele?’ he then said to Daniel Degadillo who didn’t even reply.

The club chairman had also confirmed that a deal to sign young right full back Jose Baldovinos was complete. When he heard about the deal, Jocks reply was ‘I didn’t realise I’d signed a new full back?’

‘You didn’t, I did. Remember, you just keep your mind on managing and coaching, I’ll do the rest’.

Heading into that first game against Correcaminos, Jock had already decided on how the players would be setting up for the majority of the season. A variation on the tired and tested 4-4-2 with 2 of the middle players sitting a bit deeper, in a tactic Jock has aptly named 4-4-1-1DM

The players found Jocks pre match words a bit of a blur, he was nursing a hangover after all. But assistant manager Nicolas Burtovoy relayed some words to the players, whether they were Jocks words or not only Nicolas knows.

The first half came and went with not much to write home about (as you can tell reading this), but the second half is when the game came to life. 15 minutes in and Jock’s team had scored the opening goal. A low cross from the right, by new boy Baldovinos no less, was smothered in at the far post by other new signing (not one of Jocks) Paul Uscanga who made a rare run into the box from defensive midfield.

Not content with sitting back, Jock urged the players on as best he could to grab a second and secure the win, although it wasn’t meant to be.

Not having much professional experience to call upon, Jock was giving instructions as he knew best, a lot of shouting and swearing! ‘Gomez! Fucking get back will ya’ was followed by ‘For fuck sake you soft Mexican prick get up’ which was then followed up with, whilst looking at the clubs assistant manager, Nicolas Burtovoy, who had spoken to Jock after another one of his outbursts ‘I don’t care if he’s Hose A, Hose B or Hose C, he needs to stop fucking about and get back defending!’

Jose Cortes was the player in question who Jock had called Gomez, he’ll have to work on the names and quickly. But the Scottish idiot on the side line jumping and shouting had made some difference to the Cancun players, as a long ball from out wide was powered home late on in the game which did finish 1 apiece.

At least they didn’t lose was all Jock could think about, feeling slightly aggrieved to have thrown 2 points away late on.
